How to organize a kaleidoscope conversation
The only rule of the kaleidoscope conversation is that you cannot answer the questions. Here are some steps:

1. Compose a seed question. Where do you want to begin your exploration? What question can you imagine opening up the door to deeper inquiry. If you like, you can choose a song, poem, or prose as your prompt.
2. Jot down a few other questions that have been plaguing you. You can pepper these into the conversation from time to time to gently facilitate.
3. Gather a group together. No fewer than 5 and no more than 50 people is ideal. Agree on a set length of time. Conversations can be as short as 20 minutes or as long as 1 hour. The longer the better. Have a recording device or note taker on hand.
4. Introduce the kaleidoscope conversation. Ask your seed question or present your prompt.
5. Allow the conversation to flow naturally. Don't worry if there are long pauses. Our brains rewire in silence. Feel free to ask questions but be sure your voice isn't heard more than the other participants.
6. End the conversation at the end of the allotted time. Think of it as a timed meditation. Share your notes or recording with the group.

What is a kaleidoscope conversation?
Fascism is a disease traceable by its symptoms: aggressivity, self-aggrandizement, nationalism, consolidation of power, ahistoricism, racism, etc. Yet these symptoms are merely signals of an underlying condition: the inability or refusal of individuals and society-at-large to question a priori truths, beliefs, and assumptions. We spend so much time trying to explain them, but who are we? Clearly “we” on the “left” don’t have all the answers because if we did, we would be “winning.” How might the practice of asking questions build depth and clarity into our worldviews? “Truth as Theatrical Fiction” is an exploration of those places where our minds are prohibited from straying. The central component of this project is a series of kaleidoscope conversations—a mode of dialogue that privileges questions above answers. One question leads to another; the questions weave together into a dynamic stream-of-consciousness conversation that foregrounds the courage to explore the unknown together rather than our tendency to wield the knowledge and truths we hold dear as badges, beacons, and weapons.

Each Thursday, throughout the month of November 2017, Ujazdowski Center for Contemporary Arts hosted a kaleidoscope conversation as part of the exhibition Gotong Royong: The things we do together. This document records all of the questions that were posed over the course of four sessions. Ideally, for participants, this experience was meaningful practice in questioning assumptions, setting aside egos, and facing without fear the state of not-knowing.

Faszyzm jest chorobą możliwą do rozpoznania po jej symptomach: agresji, nacjonalizmie, konsolidacji władzy, korupcji, ahistoryzmie, rasizmie itd. Jednakże symptomy te są zaledwie sygnałami ukrytej atrofii dociekliwości jednostki i społeczeństwa jako ogółu. W obliczu gwałtownego wzrostu globalnego faszyzmu musimy rozważyć, jakie pytania zadajemy sobie, naszym rówieśnikom, naszym rodzinom, naszym nauczycielom, naszym przywódcom, zadawania jakich zaś unikamy.

"Truth as Theatrical Fiction" [„Prawda jako teatralna fikcja”] to badanie tych miejsc, do których zgłębiania nasze umysły są zachęcane, i tych, po których błąkać się nam zabrania. Głównym elementem tego projektu jest cykl „kalejdoskopowych rozmów” – trybu dialogu, który pytania stawia ponad odpowiedziami. Jedno pytanie prowadzi do kolejnego; pytania łączą się w dynamiczną rozmowę, która wysuwa na pierwszy plan odwagę do zbadania razem nieznanego, a nie naszą skłonność do wykorzystywania wiedzy i prawd, które cenimy jako narzędzie walki.

Przez cały listopad, w każdy czwartek o godzinie szesnastej Zamek Ujazdowski gościć będzie kalejdoskopowe rozmowy w przestrzeni Intervalo Escola. W ciągu tygodnia, od piątku do wtorku, w przestrzeni wystawy dostępny jest dyktafon, będący platformą [wypowiedzi] dla każdego, kto udzieli pięciominutowej odpowiedzi na pytanie: „W jaki sposób my jako społeczeństwo dotarliśmy do tego momentu?”. Chcielibyśmy, żeby respondenci odpowiedzieli na pytanie w dowolny sposób, taki, jaki uznają za stosowny, po angielsku, jeśli czują się na tyle swobodnie. Odpowiedzi będą analizowane w środę i zadecydują o naczelnym pytaniu w czwartkowej rozmowie kalejdoskopowej. Rozmowy będą rejestrowane i mapowane, ukazując przepływy, zbieżności, przesunięcia i dziury w naszych procesach myślowych.
